Press release: ‘As Little as Possible, as Much as Necessary’: HealthforAnimals Movie on Antibiotics and Safeguarding Animal Health and Welfare

27/01/2016

Brussels, 27 January 2016 – Following the landmark resolution made at the World Economic Forum in Davos to tackle antibiotic resistance, HealthforAnimals has renewed its call to promote the responsible use of antibiotics, and communicate the importance of veterinary medicine to global health for both animals and humans.

As part of its campaign to raise awareness of the role of antibiotics in animal health, HealthforAnimals, the global animal medicines association, has published a guide entitled: ‘Antibiotics’.

The guide aims to dispel inaccurate or misleading information and can be freely accessed on their website: www.healthforanimals.org. To further help explain the use of antibiotics in animal health and to objectively outline their important role in ensuring animal health and welfare, HealthforAnimals has also created a new animation entitled: ‘As little as possible, as Much as Necessary’. Whilst acknowledging the current issue of antimicrobial resistance, the animation advises the promotion of the responsible use of antibiotics in both animal and human health as the greatest way to ‘future proof’ them for next generations. As HealthforAnimals’ Executive Director Carel du Marchie Sarvaas explains: “Using antibiotics responsibly, when they are needed, in the amount needed and under the supervision of a veterinarian will help to ensure greater animal health and welfare, provide a safe and secure food supply, and protect the important relationship we have with our pets.”

The animation forms part of a stream of educational content HealthforAnimals has released which can be found on its YouTube channel and on its website. To be the first to hear about upcoming content, follow HealthforAnimals on Twitter @Health4Animals.
